About the Organization

ABOUT PALAU

Set in the Micronesian region of the western Pacific Ocean, Palau is an independent country of approximately 20,000 people. Although the country's land mass is spread over several hundred islands, most people live in Koror and Babeldaob. Palau is renowned for its unspoiled natural environment, including the Rock Islands (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), beautiful ocean waters, and pristine beaches. It is a top destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. Palau also has historical significance due to WWII battles, with relics visible on land and underwater.

This year marks Palau's 31st year of independence. It is a stable, democratic country with a legal system derived from U.S. law. Palau has a special relationship with the U.S. through a Compact of Free Association, allowing U.S. citizens to work freely and providing for Palau's security. English is the national language, and the U.S. dollar is the official currency. U.S. citizens can represent Palau's government without prior approval and are eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. Tourism is Palau's main economic industry, attracting tourists mainly from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China.

The Palauan legal system closely resembles that of the U.S., making it easy for U.S.-trained or licensed lawyers to practice in Palau.
